Girl Ray's latest offering, “Begging You Now,” from their highly anticipated third album, Prestige, transports listeners to a vibrant clubland steeped in Hi-NRG eighties disco pop. The three-piece, consisting of Poppy Hankin, Iris McConnell, and Sophie Moss, collaborated with Grammy Award-winning producer Ben H. Allen (known for his work with M.I.A, Gnarls Barkley, Christina Aguilera, and Deerhunter) to create a fusion of their debut's shambolic charm and the indiefied R&B of their previous release, Girl.
Inspired by the New York City queer ballroom scene depicted in the TV drama Pose, Prestige sees Girl Ray embracing disco music as a celebration of sexuality and outsider culture. Love is the central theme here – from the joy of falling in love to the fear of getting hurt by it and the longing for it when feeling alone. “Begging You Now” encapsulates the album's essence, encouraging us to immerse ourselves in the dance floor and lose ourselves in the magical realm of love and connection.
