On July 6th, Billie Eilish surprised fans with an announcement that she had contributed a song to the soundtrack of the upcoming movie. The track is titled “What Was I Made For?” and Eilish shared on Instagram that it was made specifically for the film and Barbie. She expressed how much the song means to her and hopes it will have an impact on listeners. The single is set to be released on July 19th, just two days before the movie's official release. Eilish also credited her frequent collaborator and brother, Finneas O'Connell, who was tagged in the post. Fifty released their upbeat song called “Barbie Dreams.”
“What Was I Made For” is slated for a July 13th release and features contributions from Eilish's Grammy-winning older brother, FINNEAS. The duo previously won an Oscar for best original song in 2022 for co-writing the title song from the James Bond film No Time to Die.
The Barbie movie, starring Margot Robbie, will be released on July 21st. Billie Eilish's song “What Was I Made For?” will be featured in the soundtrack. The teaser shows Barbie in a magical pink world, descending from her house into a pink convertible. Ken (played by Ryan Gosling) serenades her on the beach at night.
An upcoming Barbie movie will show a more complex and emotional side of her world. The director, Greta Gerwig, said the film tackles the issue of some women feeling Barbie is oppressive. Mattel is open to exploring this aspect of Barbie's story.
