The Lovell Sisters once existed. Rebecca and Megan disbanded in 2009 but reformed as Larkin Poe and are about to release Blood Harmony. The band’s name is based on their great-name. grandfather’s
They play southern rock and blues. Rebecca writes most of the songs, while Megan plays lap-steel and resonator guitar and creates vocal harmonies. Larkin Poe and Rebecca’s husband, Tyler Bryant, co-produced the album.
First track ‘Deep Stays Down’ bleeds in softly with a sweet southern blues guitar riff before powerfully letting loose, helped by touring rhythm section, drummer Kevin McGowan and bassist Tarka Layman. Royal Blood makes ‘Bad Spell’ fuzzy and explosive. Larkin Poe’s homage to Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ 1956 blues-rock classic.
On ‘Blood Harmony,’ the sisters sing songs like ‘Georgia Off My Mind’ and ‘Southern Comfort’ about being American southerners. Both songs are well-written but hindered by southern stereotypes like “blue jeans,” “Coca-Cola,” and “state lines.”
Megan Lovell is in full force on ‘Bolt Cutters & The Family Name’, as Rebecca sings, “You can take me outta the fire, but you can’t take the fire outta me.
The title song honors their musically talented family. Growing up, the sisters were exposed to hard ’70s rock, blues, and guitar-based artists. ‘Kick the Blues’ has a Joan Jett-like vibe.
